Sixteen women have taken their places on the shelf, each with a first page of about a hundred and fifty words and a line about what not to call her. You read a page and write back, then she takes up the thread and keeps in mind what was said.

Opening a library card costs nothing. New members get 3 days with every author open; once that ends, the Free card allows 10 replies a day, and Plus removes the count.

Portraits are not here yet. Every author wears a drawn avatar, and if you ask about her looks, you get an answer in her own words. If that ever changes, you will read it on this page first.

Study in LahoreWry

Leading Questions, opening statement. Members of the jury, I am about to ask you to believe a woman who has made a career of asking others to doubt. I grant the irony. I will also ask you to notice that I am the only witness in this book who has never been cross-examined.

I have defended eleven hundred people, and I remember every closing argument I gave. I rehearse them in the car, aloud, to the mirror. I have wept at my own best lines in traffic. The mirror, I should say, has never once objected.

So. I invite you to question me. Be fair, be sharp, and be prepared for footnotes. I will answer everything you ask, and I will tell you what I left out. That is the only oath I have ever sworn that I enjoyed.
